Sustainably Grown

Why Buy From Us?

At Early Bird Family Farm we are inspired by the heirloom varieties of flowers and vegetables and spend hours researching types of blooms that perform well in a vase so that you can get as much enjoyment as possible out of your bouquet. It is our passion to create a healthy home not only for ourselves but for all living things from the smallest insects to frogs, birds and mammals. It is this biodiversity that helps keep our crops pollinated and the pests in balance. It is all about working with Mother Nature, not against her, growing bee-friendly flowers, and flowers free of any pesticides.

Sustainably Grown

Why Local Is Better

Over 80 % of cut flowers are imported, shipped from thousands of miles away in lots of packaging and fumigated upon arrival to ensure they don’t bring any unwanted pests into Canada. Since flowers are not edible crops they are exempt from regulations on pesticide residues and often chemicals are not only lethal to the pollinators but highly hazardous to humans. There are also considerable labour concerns.

About The Farm

No matter what we grow whether it be our hay, vegetables or our flowers, these are the principles we follow:

Build soil health through using rotational grazing of our animals and birds and composting everything we can and applying it back to the soil.

Encourage a balance of insects, birds and wildlife and provide conditions that are as healthy as possible.

Enhance the health of the watershed and the air around us by not putting anything on the plants or soil that will find it’s way into the ground water or our pond.

Constantly work at increasing the nutrition and flavour of the foods we produce.

Enhancing the beauty and value of the land from the perspectives of humans and non-humans.

We Have Seeds

Seed Security and Genetic Diversity

Hundreds of excellent plant varieties have been discontinued as big corporations have consolidated the seed industry and focused on more profitable hybrids. If you save your own seed, however, you control the supply and ensure that patents are not put on the foods and flowers that we all want to enjoy.

Local Crops You Can Count On

Regional Adaptation

This is where saving seeds can get exciting at least to plant nerds. Most commercially available seed has been selected because it performs fairly well across the entire country if given synthetic fertilizers. (Several companies now offer seeds selected specifically to perform well in organic conditions — but this isn’t the norm.) When you save seed from the best-performing plants grown on your own land and with your unique cultural conditions, you gradually develop varieties that are better adapted to your soil, climate and growing practices

Pollinator Conservation Garden

While different pollinators may have specific needs to support each stage of their lifecycle, they all need high-quality habitat that provides an abundance of flowers, shelter and nesting sites, and protection from pesticides. Pollination results in the production of seeds and without seeds plants do not produce and thus the majority of plants that we rely on for food, nutrition and beauty, cease to exist.

On Early Bird Family Farm we host hives of rescue bees. You can think of our farm as their rehab centre and we do everything we can to assist their recovery.

What To Do When You Bring Your Flowers Home

  1. Remove the paper wrap and elastic band.
  2. Re-cut the stems (don’t do this step with daffodils – you don’t want their sap to start again and affect other flowers) to a suitable length based on your vase.
  3. Put in a vase with lots of fresh water – make sure all the stems are submerged and there aren’t leaves below the water line.
  4. The ideal is to re-cut the stems every 3 days and replace their water.
  5. Place the vase somewhere out of direct sunlight. Cut-flowers will last longest when kept in a cooler part of your house.

Our bouquets should last about a week, often-times longer if kept in ideal conditions.

Make Your Wedding Day Special

DIY Wedding Flowers

You can have flowers at your wedding that are not only unique and special but that reflect your values. Brides can request in advance bulk buckets of our sustainably-grown blooms and foliage. We grow a wide selection of foliage and extra bits like seed pods and grasses to add interest and beauty to your bouquets. DIY buckets are a great option to save money on flowers. You can also do this with your friends and family and create some wonderful memories. You can either choose the flowers yourself or for a small fee we can provide designer’s choice varieties. You don’t need to spend your life savings to have a beautiful wedding day.

Pick Your Own

You can purchase a ticket that consists of a one hour time slot so that there is no concern of being close to others when you are at the farm as we will ensure that there will be lots of space to ensure physical distancing while such regulations are in effect. Naturally you can come with a person or two that you are normally in contact with. You will be given a size of container of your choice to fill during that time and the cost of your reservation will be deducted from the amount owing for the flowers or produce.
